bioeconomy: an introduction.
mechanical treatment for sorting of plastic waste
thermochemical processes on plastic waste and residual biomass: pyrolysis, gasification.
Chemical processes on waste: hydrolysis, glycolysis, alcoholysis.
Methods of characterization of pyrolysis products from biomass
Slides provided by the teacher by means Moodle application
Learning Objectives
Familiarity with the main mechanical, chemical and thermochemical methods for the treatment of end of life plastics and residual biomass, devoted to the production of fuel or chemicals.
Prerequisites
General Chemistry, Basic Organic, and polymers.
Teaching Methods
The "slides" will be provided to students through the Moodle application. Some scientific articles dealing with case study will be discussed in class together with the students.
Further information
For any further information it is possible to contact the teacher directly: luca.rosi@unifi.it
Type of Assessment
The final exam consists of an interview with open questions. The student has the opportunity to present a brief review about a case study of his interest.
Course program
After having classified the waste according to the current legislation and the discussion of the principles underlying the so-called "circular economy" (with reference to the European directives), the course specifically examines the current treatments of waste consisting of plastic materials and biomass in order to their valorisation. Plans are mentioned while the chemical reactions involved in the treatment processes discussed are studied in depth.
A section of the course is specifically dedicated to the characterization methods of the products obtained from the biomass pyrolysis.
The course concludes with the presentation of a case study: pyrolysis for the production of fuel from tires out of use / integrated biorefinery process.
